Saint John and the dance of the Coveteres

St. John the Baptist is the head of the parish of the same name and, since medieval times, the lord of the town of Manises was the one who organized the festival in honor of the Saint.

In the last century, after the abolition of feudal lordships in Spain, the festival, like many other tasks, became the responsibility of the Village Council and therefore was organized by it, remaining that way until today.

One of the most interesting traditions that exist was to make, with the first grains of wheat from the harvest, a large cake or roll, which is placed on a silver tray at the feet of the Saint.

It is also customary to place two large elm trees on the sides of the parish entrance door, as a floral tribute to the titular saint.

Another of the traditional festivities of this day, which in recent years has been recovered, thanks to the initiative of the regional dance group of the city Repicó, is the "Ball de les Coveteres". A traditional dance that the inhabitants of Manises danced in the town square before the lord, who in turn gave them a snack.

The concert that the Societat Musical L'Artística Manisense performs the weekend closest to June 24 in Cor de Jesús square has also been traditional.

Some Falla Commissions and neighborhood festival commissions plant and burn bonfires in honor of the saint.
